Colombia vs Chile Copa América match preview

The outstanding quarter-final tie is surely this one from São Paulo.

Chile have won the last two Copa Américas, in 2015 and 2016, but their reign over South America could end here.

That’s because Colombia have been excellent so far in this tournament.

La Tricolor kicked off with a very impressive 2-0 win over Argentina; Roger Martínez and Duván Zapata the scorers.

They then had to work very hard but eventually beat Qatar 1-0, Zapata getting a very late winner.

That win guaranteed top spot in Group B so Carlos Queiroz changed the entire XI for their final game against Paraguay.

Even so, Gustavo Cuéllar’s first international goal secured a 1-0 win in Salvador.

22 of their 23 man squad have now played at this tournament, the most players they’ve used since 2001.

Colombia have also won all three group games at a Copa América for the first time since 2001.

Those are both good omens as Colombia’s one and only triumph at this tournament was 18 years ago.

Will they go all the way once again?

This match certainly will surely test them.

The defending champions got off to a flier at this tournament; Erick Pulgar, Eduardo Vargas and Alexis Sánchez the scorers in a 4-0 win over Japan.

Four days later Sánchez was on target again, this time in a 2-1 win over Ecuador.

That meant they went into Monday’s match with Uruguay only needing a draw to finish top.

They were certainly the better side in the first half but could not find the breakthrough.

Uruguay then improved after the break and scored the only goal of the game with eight minutes remaining.

That was just Chile’s second defeat in 15 Copa América games but it does mean they finished as group runners-up.

They’ll need Charles Aránguiz’s good form to continue; he provided the most assists (3) and created the most chances (12) in the group stages.

However, Colombia have been the outstanding team at this tournament so far and are the favourites.

It’s going to be close but Colombia should just edge this one.
