Clause in Tammy Abraham’s Chelsea deal has activated extension to 2023 – Telegraph

As confirmed by the reliable Matt Law, Tammy Abraham’s contract with Chelsea has automatically been extended by a further year, after certain conditions in his previous deal were met.

Abraham impressing

22-year-old striker Abraham has enjoyed a fine campaign to date, on the back of his return to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Following a prolific 2018/19 in the Championship with Aston Villa, Blues boss Frank Lampard opted to hand the Englishman a chance to impress as part of his first-team squad, after a transfer embargo prevented Chelsea from adding to the club’s options up top last summer.

And to say that Abraham has since gone on to grasp his opportunity with both hands would be putting it lightly.

The Pensioners youth product has (for most of the season) cemented himself as the club’s first-choice centre-forward, generally confining the more experienced Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi to the bench.

All told, across all competitions, Abraham has directly contributed to a none-too-shabby 22 goals.

Tammy staying put

As such, the young hitman’s fine form over the course of the campaign thus far has seen many begin to suggest that Abraham could yet prove the long-term solution to Chelsea’s woes up top.

This was, however, prior to a recent wobbly spell for the starlet.

After Olivier Giroud capitalised on an ankle problem which kept Abraham sidelined for several weeks by reestabilishing himself in the plans of Frank Lampard, the Blues subsequently also announced the addition of prolific RB Leipzig hitman Timo Werner last month.

Such developments, in turn, had seen inevitable question marks begin to crop back up, surrounding whether or not Chelsea genuinely view Abraham as a potential contributor for the club over the course of the next decade.

Whatever the case may be, though, the young attacker’s immediate future, at the very least, does appear to lie in London.

As revealed by the reliable Matt Law of the Telegraph this evening, a clause in Abraham’s contract at Stamford Bridge, based around appearances and goals, has now been activated.

This, in turn, has triggered an additional year being added to the English international’s Blues deal.

Abraham is now tied to Chelsea until the summer of 2023.

Significantly, it is also added that the capital giants ‘still want to reward him with a new long-term deal.’
