City to play Real Madrid in Manchester while Frank Lampard’s Blues set to travel to Germany

Manchester City vs Real Madrid & Bayern Munich vs Chelsea

For several weeks there have been rumours which has indicated that UEFA could play all the four remaining Champions League last-16 second-leg ties in the same country.

While such a decision would have a lesser bearing on Chelsea, who trail Bayern Munich 3-0 after the first-leg in London, Man City would stand to lose home advantage against Real Madrid.

Man City beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the first-leg in Spain.

The Times recently suggested that UEFA could move all these matches to Portugal.

However, Spanish paper AS have today reported that that’s unlikely to happen. Readers are told:

The return legs of the Round of 16 games will be played at the home grounds of City, Barça, Bayern and Juventus with UEFA to confirm the decision on Friday.

Why have UEFA reached this decision?

According to AS, UEFA reached this decision after coming under pressure from Man City and Barcelona:

UEFA were anxious that these games were initially staged in Portugal.

However, pressure from City and Barça to play at their respective grounds has ultimately been instrumental in the decision that UEFA will confirm on Friday.

Teams in the Champions League quarter-finals

The following teams have already qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals: PSG, Atletico Madrid, Atalanta and RB Leipzig.

Friday’s Champions League draw

This Friday, on July 10, UEFA will hold the draw for the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Champions League.

There are no seedings and any team can be drawn against each other.

These matches will be played in Lisbon, Portugal.

UEFA will use Benfica and Porto’s stadia to house the games.

Due to the impact of Covid-19, the quarter-finals and semi-final matches will be knockout one-off occasions.

The draw for the Champions League will begin at midday CET.
