Ciro Immobile set for Golden Boot after Cristiano Ronaldo left out of Juventus squad to face Roma

Following the squad announcements for the final day of the Serie A season, Lazio striker Ciro Immobile has been all but confirmed as the winner of the latest edition of the Golden Boot.

Final day fireworks in store?

The 2019/20 Italian top-flight campaign is set to come to a close this weekend.

Perennial champions Juventus have of course already been crowned as the country’s best, the Bianconeri’s 9th-straight title.

Key positions elsewhere in the Serie A table, however, are still very much up for grabs.

Whilst both Brescia and SPAL have already been condemned to the drop, Lecce sit just a point adrift of 17th-placed Genoa with one game to play.

It is also all still very much to play for in the battle for automatic qualification for next season’s Champions League.

As things stand, it is Inter Milan who hold the advantage, with Antonio Conte’s men sitting in 2nd.

However, Atalanta, who have continued to defy the odds in 2019/20, sit just a point adrift of the Nerazzurri, ahead of a final day showdown between the two sides in Bergamo this evening.

And, incredibly, locked in 3rd with Atalanta are Simone Inzaghi’s Lazio, with the capital giants also set for a high-profile outing later today, when they visit the Stadio San Paolo to face Napoli.

Immobile’s crowning imminent

As outlined above, however, while key targets are still up for grabs for a number of sides, when it comes to individual glory, Serie A’s most coveted prize has this afternoon been decided.

The top-scorer race in Italy has long been narrowed to a pair of competitors, in the form of Ciro Immobile and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The latter, though, would have required a historic performance tonight to oust Immobile from top spot, with Ronaldo sitting on 31 league goals as things stand, 4 adrift of the Capocannoniere leader.

And, as outlined above, any remaining hope that Juventus’ star man may have maintained of catching Immobile has this afternoon been distinguished.

This comes with Ronaldo having been omitted from Maurizio Sarri’s matchday squad to take on Roma, as the Portuguese attacker rests up ahead of his side’s Champions League last-16 2nd-leg meeting with Lyon.

As such, with Romelu Lukaku a further 8 goals adrift of Ronaldo, Immobile’s Capocannoniere crown has been all but confirmed.

Not only that, but Lazio’s prolific hitman is also set for his first-ever European Golden Shoe, with Immobile sitting a goal clear of 2nd-placed Robert Lewandowski, with the aforementioned meeting with Napoli this evening still to come.
