Christensen in, Rudiger out: Chelsea defender punished vs Southampton

Southampton 2 – Chelsea 3

Last weekend, Chelsea won 3-2 at Southampton in the Premier League.

Chelsea won at St Mary’s after three goals in nine minutes in the second half.

Chelsea looked all the sea as Dusan Tadic and Jan Bednarek gave the Saints a 2-nil lead by the hour mark.

But then Southampton imploded. Olivier Giroud scored twice for Chelsea – his first league goals for the Blues since joining from Arsenal – while Eden Hazard scored the other.

Andreas Christensen in, Antonio Rudiger out

Chelsea’s backline continued to look shoddy at St Mary’s.

Antonio Conte played a back three of Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen and Gary Cahill against the Saints.

Christensen’s inclusion was a surprise after the Dane had been dropped against West Ham. While it was also surprising that German centre-half Antonio Rudiger was left out the matchday squad altogether.

Rudiger has since revealed why he played no part in the Southampton game.

Following the West Ham draw, Rudiger told Sky Sports he did not “understand why after 1-0 we always drop and let the opponent get more ball possession”.

Rudiger has since told German broadcaster ZDF that those comments meant he missed the Southampton game:

Probably. But I didn’t mean it that way.

It was a fact, it wasn’t about the tactics. I did not attack anyone personally, I meant us as a team.

It’s just normal from my side. He’s my coach. I must respect him. And he’s a very, very good coach.
