Chile vs Uruguay Copa América match preview

The two sides who’ve won the last three Copa Américas between them clash in Rio, with top spot on the line.

Chile have won the last two editions of this competition but most doubted that they could go all the way again.

Those doubters have been silenced.

La Roja kicked off with an impressive 4-0 win over Japan; Erick Pulgar, Eduardo Vargas and Alexis Sánchez the scorers.

Then, on Friday night in Salvador, they took on Ecuador.

José Pedro Fuenzalida gave them the lead after just eight minutes, volleying in off the post.

However, their lead didn’t last long.

Goalkeeper Gabriel Arias brought down Enner Valencia who slotted home from the spot; 1-1.

But Chile won it just six minutes into the second half.

Charles Aránguiz’d cross picked out Alexis Sánchez who volleyed into the ground and bounced the ball into the far top corner.

Two wins out of two for Chile who are unbeaten in their last seven Copa América games; their longest unbeaten run since 1945

That means, they’re currently two points above Uruguay in Group C.

La Celeste also began with a 4-0 victory as they demolished Ecuador at the Mineirão.

However, they were in trouble early on against Japan on Thursday.

The Asian side took the lead after just 25 minutes.

Just six minutes later, Uruguay were awarded a very soft penalty.

Luis Suárez took advantage of the questionable decision, rolling in his 58th international goal.

On the hour mark, Japan then took the lead again before Uruguay equalised for a second time through José María Giménez’s towering header from Nicolás Lodeiro’s corner.

2-2 it finished at Arena do Grêmio.

So, as it stands, both are guaranteed a place in the quarter-finals.

Uruguay must win to finish top, if they don’t Chile will win the group.

The runners up in this section will face an in form Colombia side in the last eight.

The group winners will get a more favourable draw as they’ll face Group A’s third place side Peru.

Which South American heavyweight will come out on top at Estádio do Maracanã?
