Chelsea’s Thiago Silva follows Ryan Giggs into exclusive club after goal vs Tottenham

The goal netted by Thiago Silva during Chelsea’s meeting with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday saw the Brazilian secure for himself a small piece of Premier League history.

Veteran stopper Silva nodded home early in the 2nd-half of action at Stamford Bridge this evening, getting on the end of Mason Mount’s devilish delivery to leave Hugo Lloris with no chance.

And, in the process, the former AC Milan standout – at 37 years and 123 days old – became the oldest player to find the net in a Premier League fixtures since Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs all the way back in 2013:

Blues back on track

Silva’s goal proved the 2nd and final of Chelsea’s goals on Sunday, as Thomas Tuchel’s men steadied the ship courtesy of a deserved 2-0 triumph over capital rivals Spurs.

The Pensioners headed into today’s action at Stamford Bridge having secured a paltry three points from an available twelve in the Premier League over the course of the last month, in the process all but surrendering their status as title contenders.

Their derby victory this evening, though, means that daylight, at the very least, remains over the chasing pack behind the European champions.

Though all of Manchester United, West Ham, Arsenal and Tottenham boast games in hand, Chelsea now sit nine points clear of 4th spot, amid a tense battle for Champions League football in the English top-flight.
