Chelsea boss Lampard defends ‘hugely talented’ Loftus-Cheek amid recent criticism

Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard has recently leapt to the defence of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, after the midfielder came under fire for his showing vs Brighton.

Loftus-Cheek struggles vs Brighton

Chelsea opened their Premier League campaign at the Amex on Monday.

With the likes of Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic struggling with injuries, Frank Lampard handed a rare start to Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The midfielder, of course, missed the majority of the 2019/20 season through injury, featuring just seven times in the league.

This lack of recent game time, coupled with his being asked to play in an unfamiliar advanced role, resulted in a rather subpar display on the part of the 24-year-old versus Brighton.

And, though a similarly hit-and-miss display would likely have been forthcoming from most players under such circumstances, Loftus-Cheek actually came under fairly heavy criticism from fans and pundits alike.

It has since even been reported that the English international could be set to depart Stamford Bridge.

Lampard defends Loftus-Cheek

As mentioned above, though, Frank Lampard has since moved to defend his player.

Chelsea are set to play host to Liverpool on Sunday, a tie in which one would imagine Loftus-Cheek will feature, due to the continued absences of Pulisic and Ziyech.

As such, speaking in his pre-Liverpool press conference, Lampard was inevitably drawn on the recent criticism of his all-action midfielder.

And the Chelsea boss responded by assuring that there is ‘lots more to come’ from Loftus-Cheek, labelling the 24-year-old ‘hugely talented’:

“If there is harsh criticism of him from the game against Brighton, then it is certainly very harsh because to come back from an injury he has been difficult for him. He has put a lot of hours in and he’s a hugely talented player and great lad.

“There’s lots more to come from Ruben Loftus-Cheek but the nature of this game is very reactionary so unfortunately people will say it as they see it without knowing the story behind the scenes. He’s fought back hard to get where he is and he’s a very talented player.”
