Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi has recently been discussing his international future, with the prospect of swapping England for Ghana not ruled out.
England secure Rice & Grealish
England have been fairly lucky in recent times when it comes to players opting to represent them.
Declan Rice and Jack Grealish were both eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland, with the former actually making three senior appearances for them and Grealish featuring at under-21 level.
However, both eventually opted to pledge their allegiance to England are now likely to play key roles in Englandâs Euro 2020 campaign which gets underway later this week.
Hudson-Odoi to play for Ghana?
Now though, as mentioned above, one Englishman could be set to ditch the Three Lions for Ghana.
Callum Hudson-Odoi, born in London, has played of England at every level from under-16 to under-21.
The Chelsea winger has also made three senior appearances for Gareth Southgateâs side, the first of which came back in March of 2019 vs the Czech Republic.
CHO, however, has not featured for England since November of 2019, and is now seemingly opening to representing Ghana, who he is eligible to play for due to his father.
As football.london explain, FIFA rules state that a player can switch national teams so long as they are eligible to represent them, played no more than three matches for their current national team, none of the matches were in the final tournament of a FIFA World Cup or confederation competition and they all happened before the player turned 21 years of age.
All of the above applies to Hudson-Odoi, who is still only 20 and has only every represented England in Euro qualifiers.
When speaking recently, the winger refused to rule of the possibility of playing for Ghana:
“England came and I said ‘yeah, let me go and play for my country.’ But I said Ghana is my home as well, so weâll see, weâll see.
“Youâll never know, so.”
“I think obviously when youâre young, you have the opportunity to play for England throughout all the years, from under-15 to under-16 all the way up.
“When they obviously gave me the opportunity to come, I was in the country already. Itâs something that I already had in my mind, set on already playing for England.”
