‘Chelsea’s Willian to Man United’
The Sun on Thursday have a recycled transfer rumour.
It’s once again trumpeted that Willian could leave Chelsea to join Man United.
This rumour has been swirling about for more than a season, ever since Jose Mourinho took over the reigns at Old Trafford.
Neil Custis has penned the following in the tabloid:
Willian’s Stamford Bridge contract lasts to 2020 and they would demand a £30million fee — the same price they paid to Shakhtar Donetsk five years ago.
Mourinho is planning some big changes as he bids to build a side capable of challenging Manchester City next season.
The Sun’s Juan Mata mistake
However the whole premise of the Sun’s story is based on a factual error.
In order to bring Willian in from Chelsea, it’s claimed Man United may sell on Juan Mata.
Readers are told the following about Mata’s situation at Old Trafford:
Mata’s Old Trafford contract expires next summer, although United have the option to keep him until 2019.
But that’s simply not true. At the end of January, Man United confirmed that Mata’s contract has been extended until 2019. As reported on the club’s website:
Manchester United have triggered a clause to extend Juan Mata’s contract by one year, tying the Spaniard to the club until June 2019.
A copy of the report confirming Juan Mata’s contract extension is below.
