Rudiger’s time at Chelsea
Antonio Rudiger joined Chelsea from Serie A outfit AS Roma in July of 2017.
The Blues are believed to have paid around £31.5m for the German’s services.
After making the switch to England, Rudiger quickly cemented himself as a regular feature in Chelsea’s backline.
The 2017/18 campaign saw the 26-year-old feature 45 times across all competitions for Chelsea, in which he scored three and provided two assists.
Rudiger had a similarly impressive 2018/19 campaign, with the towering defender making 44 appearances for Chelsea.
There is a good chance that Rudiger would have featured even more last term, but the German was unfortunately hit with a knee injury in April, which saw him miss the back end of the campaign, including the Europa League final.
Rudiger’s contract situation
Rudiger’s battle with injuries has also seen him miss the majority of the current campaign.
In fact, the former Roma star has managed just 45 minutes of action for Chelsea’s senior side this season.
Rudiger hasn’t been able to show new Chelsea boss Frank Lampard too much of his ability. But the London outfit are still said to be keen to extend the stopper’s contract.
Rudiger’s current deal is due to expire in June of 2022.
But the Daily Mail have reported that Chelsea want to accelerate Rudiger’s contract talks:
Chelsea want to accelerate Antonio Rudiger’s contract talks – despite the fact he’s played just 45 minutes this season.
While Rudiger still has over two years remaining on his current deal, the report from the Mail also claims that Chelsea want to eliminate any doubt over his long-term future by locking the German down to fresh terms.
