Chelsea vs Arsenal prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal

Chelsea suffered a surprise defeat late on against Newcastle but still remain in a comfortable position inside the top four.

There have been noticeable improvements in Arsenal’s game since Mikel Arteta took over, but the Gunners are still struggling to pick up victories.

Chelsea will take confidence from their very recent fixture over the Gunners.

Chelsea vs Arsenal: Who will win?

Chelsea vs Arsenal Premier League match preview

Chelsea host London rivals Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

The Blues’ four-match unbeaten run came to an end as they suffered a very late defeat at Newcastle on Saturday. Former Arsenal midfielder Isaac Hayden gave the Magpies the lead deep into stoppage time, despite Chelsea controlling possession for most of the game.

Chelsea remain fourth in the table, five points ahead of Manchester United, who also suffered defeat this weekend.

Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Sheffield United on Saturday. Teenager Gabriel Martinelli scored his ninth goal of the season in all competitions to give Arsenal the lead just before half time. The Gunners looked to be heading for all three points but John Fleck equalised in the final 10 minutes.

Despite the negative result, Arsenal extended their unbeaten run to four matches. Back-to-back 1-1 draws leaves Arsenal in 10th place, 10 points behind Chelsea.

Chelsea have won less than half of their 11 Premier League matches at Stamford Bridge this season. They have also scored an uncharacteristically low 14 goals at home.

Arsenal have managed just two wins on the road this season. Only Sheffield United have drawn more matches on the road (7) than Arsenal (6).

Arsenal have won 20, drawn 16 and lost 19 of their 55 previous Premier League matches against Chelsea.

Chelsea won the reverse fixture 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium less than a month ago. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Arsenal an early lead in Mikel Arteta’s first home game in charge.

The Gunners could not sustain their first-half intensity and conceded two late goals from Jorginho and Tammy Abraham which secured the points for the Blues.

Chelsea team news vs Arsenal

Reece James was expected to miss out after picking up a knee injury against Newcastle, which means Cesar Azpilicueta will move back to his favoured right-fullback position.

UPDATE: James has been passed fit and available for this clash but it still seems likely that Azpilicueta will come in.

With Marcos Alonso still injured, out-of-favour Emerson Palmieri should be handed a start at left-back.

Ross Barkley could replace Mason Mount in the starting eleven. Unused substitute Mateo Kovacic is another midfield option for Frank Lampard.

After conceding late on at Newcastle, one or both of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen could be dropped. Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori will be hoping to benefit from any rotation.

Midfielders Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic remain sidelined.

Arsenal team news vs Chelsea

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will serve the second match of his three-game suspension.

Mikel Arteta could be without four defenders on Tuesday night. Hector Bellerin and Rob Holding are back in contention after recovering from injury but neither is likely to start at Stamford Bridge.

Calum Chambers and Kieran Tierney remain sidelined while Sead Kolasinac faces a late fitness test. Arteta will be hoping to have Sokratis Papastathopoulos back from illness.

Reiss Nelson, who has been used regularly by Arteta, will miss out. The winger picked up a hamstring strain which kept him out against Sheffield United.

Dani Ceballos, Matteo Guendouzi and Joe Willock were unused substitutes at the weekend and could all be given some minutes.
