Chelsea vs Ajax betting tips: Champions League match preview & predictions

Chelsea vs Ajax prediction: Chelsea 2-2 Ajax

Neither side can seal qualification to the knockout stage on Tuesday but a win would go a long way towards doing so.

Chelsea’s form at home, combined with Ajax’s impressive away record makes this an interesting contest.

Ajax are unbeaten in their last 13 away matches in the Champions League – a run stretching back to 2016. They have also kept three shutouts in their last four away games in the competition.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have only won three of their last eight matches at Stamford Bridge, and none of their last four home matches in the Champions League.

Chelsea vs Ajax betting tips: What are the odds?

Chelsea vs Ajax: Who will win?

Ajax have only lost one of their 20 matches this season, but that came at the hands of Tuesday’s opponents. Chelsea are 10/11 favourites to win the game while an Ajax win is priced at 14/5. The draw can be backed at 13/5.

Chelsea have scored at least one goal in 10 consecutive matches. Back both teams to score at 8/15.

Quincy Promes took his goal tally for the season to 10 with a brace on Friday night. The Dutch forward has two goals in the Champions League this season. Promes is 9/1 to open the scoring and 13/5 to score anytime in the match.

For Chelsea, Tammy Abraham could be the likeliest first scorer.

Tammy Abraham found the target last weekend against Watford, and the English striker remains at the top of the Premier League scoring charts.

Abraham is 15/4 to score first and 20/21 to score anytime.

Christian Pulisic may also be fancied to find the back of the net again. The American has been in fine scoring form for the Blues, and he’s 15/2 to score first and 21/20 to score anytime.

Chelsea vs Ajax Champions League match preview

Group H leaders Chelsea host Ajax at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

The two sides both find themselves on six points at the halfway point of the group stage. Ajax have a superior goal difference (+5) but Chelsea lead the group on the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Blues were narrow 1-0 winners when they faced Ajax at the Johan Cruyff Arena in October. Substitute Michy Batshuayi scored the match winner with less than five minutes of normal time remaining. Ajax can count themselves unlucky to have lost. Quincy Promes had a goal controversially – and perhaps incorrectly – ruled out by VAR.

Since that defeat, Ajax have won back-to-back matches, scoring four goals on both occasions. Quincy Promes (2) and David Neres (2) netted in a 4-2 away win over PEC Zwolle on Friday as Ajax maintained their six-point lead at the top of the Eredivisie.

Chelsea remain fourth in the Premier League following their 2-1 away win over Watford on Saturday. Tammy Abraham opened the scoring before Christian Pulisic netted his fourth goal in three matches. The Blues conceded a late penalty but managed to hang on for all three points.

Frank Lampard’s side are top of the form table after winning five in a row in the Premier League.

Valencia host bottom side Lille in the other Group H game on Tuesday.

Chelsea team news vs Ajax

Jorginho is suspended for Chelsea’s next Premier League match after picking up his fifth caution of the season. The Italian midfielder is available for Tuesday night and should start in the base of midfield.

Ross Barkley has missed Chelsea’s last four matches with an ankle injury and is all but ruled out. Tuesday’s match is also set to come too soon for N’Golo Kante who is closing in on a return from a groin injury.

Andreas Christensen is “pretty much fit” according to Frank Lampard after the defender recovered from a thigh problem. Christensen will compete with Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori for a spot in defence.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, Michy Batshuayi and Reece James will be hoping for more minutes after their very brief substitute appearances on Saturday. Olivier Giroud was an unused substitute and appears to be low down in Frank Lampard’s pecking order, while Pedro Rodriguez is in a similar situation.

Marcos Alonso will compete with fit-again Emerson Palmieri for a spot at left-back.

Antonio Rudiger has an ongoing pelvic issue and will see a specialist on Monday.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Marco van Ginkel are long-term absentees

Ajax team news vs Chelsea

Donny van de Beek and Lisandro Martinez both needed to go off injured on Friday night but the pair should be ready to face the Blues.

David Neres came on as a substitute in the reverse fixture and could play a bigger role on Tuesday following his brace against PEC Zwolle.

Sergino Dest and Noussair Mazraoui will compete for the right-back starting berth, with the former looking the favourite.
