Chelsea top Premier League table after dominant win over Newcastle

Newcastle vs Chelsea

Premier League football returned to our screens following the international break a short time ago.

The first clash of the weekend pitted Newcastle United against Chelsea.

The two sides headed into the tie in rather contrasting form.

Chelsea were unbeaten in eight across all competitions, and having conceded just one goal in their last six.

Newcastle, on the other hand, had managed see just one win from their previous four Premier League outings.

And, when all was said and done at St James’ Park, the 90 minutes went on to play out true to form.

Chelsea dominate

Newcastle, lining out with a back-five, started the clash pretty well – winning a corner inside two minutes.

It was the visitors who had the first decent chance of the afternoon, though, when Timo Werner burst down the left to force a good save out of Karl Darlow.

Mateo Kovacic, who scored a brace for his country in midweek, then fired an effort over 7 minutes in, as Chelsea attempted to break down a deep Newcastle side.

Hakim Ziyech then whipped a superb left-footed ball to Tammy Abraham, whose headed effort was well saved.

And, following a dominant spell, Chelsea finally took the lead inside nine minutes.

Mason Mount smashed his delivery across the Newcastle box, with Federico Fernandez – who was under pressure from Ben Chilwell – having turned the ball into his own net.

Chelsea came close to doubling their lead 14 minutes in, but Tammy Abraham was unable to connect with Werner’s cross.

The Londoners continued to pepper Newcastle’s goal, and Werner should have made it 2-0 half an hour in when he found himself with a clear sight of goal. However, the German went on to direct his effort well wide.

The first 45 eventually drew to a close with Frank Lampard likely somewhat aggrieved that his side were not already out of sight.

Chelsea go top

The second 45 began with Steve Bruce’s hosts enjoying a decent spell of possession.

But, nevertheless, Chelsea soon should have made it 2-0. This time, Fabian Schar dawdled on the ball, allowing Werner to nip in and snatch it. However, the forward was unable to get either a shot off, or square the ball.

Chelsea were then nearly made to pay for their missed chances by Isaac Hayden, who burst through one on one with Edouard Mendy, but smashed his effort over before play was called back for a foul.

Joelinton skied a further Newcastle effort just before the hour mark, as the Magpies began to gain a foothold in the game.

However, luckily for Chelsea, shortly after, Tammy Abraham stepped up to hand the visitors a much-needed two-goal lead.

Werner surged forward before slipping in Abraham, who went on to calmly slot past Darlow.

Sean Longstaff then clipped the bar from a long-range strike with just under 20 minutes left.

Timo Werner finally appeared to have earned his goal for the day as full-time approached, but his strike was ruled out for offside. And this effort was the hitman’s final involvement of the day, as he was replaced by Callum Hudson-Odoi moments later.

Newcastle had a few more decent chances over the closing stages, but a Mendy save and Andy Carroll miss from a promising position meant that Bruce’s outfit were left empty-handed following the full-time whistle.

Chelsea have now moved up, temporarily at least, to top spot in the Premier League table, and look set to play a prominent role in this season’s title race.
