Chelsea team news ahead of Man United: Concerning Chilwell update emerges, one midfielder out & another a doubt

Chelsea vs Manchester United

Sunday’s marquee Premier League fixture will see Chelsea and Manchester United go head-to-head at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues head into the weekend’s action sitting pretty atop the Premier League table on 29 points.

Manchester City, though, only trail by three points, meaning Chelsea cannot afford to lose on Sunday.

On paper, this seems very unlikely. Manchester United sit 8th in the PL at present, with a simply awful defensive record. Chelsea, on the other hand, are both the top scorers in the league and have the best defence in the division.

And though Michael Carrick is currently in charge and would guide United to a 2-0 win over Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday, Man United looked pretty poor in the first-half of that clash.

In turn, one would assume that a team of Chelsea’s quality will go on to punish United in a much more convincing manner than Unai Emery’s side.

Thomas Tuchel on Ben Chilwell, Kante, Lukaku & Kovacic

The main issue for Chelsea heading into Sunday’s game, however, are injuries.

Both N’Golo Kante and Ben Chilwell were injured during the Londoners’ win over Juventus in midweek, with it since speculated that the latter could potentially be out for the rest of the season:

As a result, Chelsea’s fans were no doubt anxious to hear from Thomas Tuchel in his pre-United press conference on Friday.

And, when conducting his presser, the German confirmed that Mateo Kovacic has been ruled out, whilst Kante is a big doubt for the United game. On Chilwell, meanwhile, Tuchel revealed that the left-back has a partial tear in his ACL and the next six weeks will decide if the defender needs surgery or not:

“Kova is still out for the game on Sunday. N’Golo twisted his knee a little bit against Juventus and feels better but it seems he will be out for some days. We still have a little hope but it’s almost a miracle if he makes it. Ben is out, he has a partial tear of his ACL, and the decision is to treat it conservatively. The next six weeks will tell the story if he makes it and be available or if he will need surgery.”

So, it seems at the very least that Chelsea will be forced to make do without Chilwell for the hectic festive period, and possibly beyond that should he end up requiring surgery – a big blow for the Blues as they look to mount a title charge.

Tuchel also confirmed that the possibility of Lukaku starting this weekend is ‘not high’:

“The possibility he starts is not very high because we can’t be sure what happens in the match and we have to find the balance to giving minutes and being absolutely competitive for 90 minutes.”
