Chelsea reportedly looking to extend Thiago Silva’s contract to 2022

Chelsea reportedly looking to extend Thiago Silva’s contract to 2022

Chelsea’s defensive record

Chelsea, of course, had a pretty dismal defensive record last season.

The Blues finished the 2019/20 campaign in possession of the worst defence of the top-10 Premier League sides.

This time around, though, Frank Lampard has turned his side’s fortunes around.

Chelsea currently boast the joint second-tightest defence in the English top-flight.

They have also conceded just two goals in their last eight outings across all competitions.

Thiago Silva set for new deal?

One of the key reasons behind Chelsea’s defensive rebirth has, of course, been their recent additions at the back.

The impact made by Edouard Mendy and Thiago Silva in particular has been clear as day.

The African, unlike Kepa, exudes confidence, building confidence in the players in front of him.

Meanwhile, Thiago Silva’s years of experience and knowledge of the game have proven crucial for Chelsea of late.

Reece James even spoke recently about how the Brazilian has helped him out:

“Thiago has brought a lot of experience. I have played alongside him a few times now. He has helped me a lot.

“You can see straight away why he has been one of the best in the world. He constantly talks to me throughout games, helping me in my positioning, directing me and making sure he is talking to me before, during and after games. It all adds up and improves performances.”

In turn, Silva looks set to be rewarded for his fine start to life in England, via a contract extension.

When signing for Chelsea back in August, Silva agreed to a one-year deal, with the option of a further year.

And, according to a recent report from Italy, the Blues are already planning to extend the stopper’s deal until 2022:
