According to The Sunday Express, Chelsea are lining up a bid for Dinamo Zagreb defender Filip Benkovic. The bid for Filip Benkovic is said to be in the region of £25 million.
20-year-old Benkovic has spent his entire short playing career in Croatia with Dinamo Zagreb.
Benkovic played a host of games for their academy and nine games for their second team before being called up to their first team in 2015.
Since debuting for Zagreb’s first team, Benkovic has racked up 76 appearances in all competitions, in which he has scored six and assisted three.
Benkovic has also managed to rack up 15 appearances in European competitions with seven of them coming in the Champions League.
The highly-rated centre-back also has the ability to push up the field and play as a centre defensive mid and he now looks like he could be Chelsea’s first signing of the summer.
Given Chelsea’s current managerial situation, you might not expect them to be signing anyone until they have a clear idea of who their manager will be for the 2018/19 season.
It’s well known that Antonio Conte is very likely to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
However, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is reluctant to sack Conte, as that will involve a £9m payoff for the last year of his contract.
Maurizio Sarri is the favourite to become the next Chelsea boss. But even though Sarri has already left Napoli and has been replaced by Carlo Ancelotti, Chelsea would still have to pay Napoli around £4.5 million in compensation for Sarri.
As a result, it doesn’t look like Chelsea’s managerial crisis will be resolved anytime soon. But that has not stopped Chelsea’s recruitment team eyeing Benkovic as a potential target this summer.
