Could Mertens be on his way to the Premier League?
Chelsea are reportedly in talks to sign Napoli striker Dries Mertens, with the Belgian’s contract set to expire in the summer.
Mertens has been a top-tier player in Europe for a few years now.
Since joining Napoli in 2013, Mertens has gone on to score 118 goals and assisted 71.
That isn’t a bad return for a player who has spent most of his time in Italy playing on the wing.
As a result of his performances, Mertens looks to be a hot commodity ahead of the summer.
The 32-year-old’s contract will expire in July, likely meaning that several clubs will be fighting for his signature.
But, according to reports, Chelsea are looking to jump the queue and sign him now.
Chelsea ‘serious’ about signing Mertens
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Chelsea are in talks with Napoli over a deal for Mertens.
He claims that ‘Chelsea are serious about acquiring Dries Mertens’.
He then continues by explaining that the Blues have contacted Napoli to ‘understand if there are the margins for a deal.’
It would no doubt be difficult for Napoli to replace Mertens’ goals before the end of the window, and you would imagine they’d be reluctant to sell.
According to Di Marzio, a move for Dries Mertens would also clarify the future of Olivier Giroud.
The Frenchman has been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge in the current window, but a move is yet to materialise.
Di Marzio finishes by revealing that Giroud is also a target for London rivals Tottenham.
