Chelsea & Frank Lampard: Roman Abramovich issues guarantees & Derby’s compensation

Chelsea & Frank Lampard

A month after the Premier League season ended, are Chelsea finally ready to begin their game of managerial musical chairs?

For weeks, if not months, Maurizio Sarri has been tipped to leave Chelsea for Juventus.

As those sides haggle over the details, Chelsea need a new manager.

Several names have been linked to the post, including Newcastle’s Rafael Benitez.

However, the Sunday Times report that Frank Lampard’s appointment appears imminent.

Roman Abramovich issues guarantees

The Sunday Times claim that Roman Abramovich has spoken directly to Frank Lampard about becoming the new Chelsea manager.

Lampard is currently at Derby County following his first season in the dugout.

As confirmed by the Telegraph on Saturday, Derby have attempted to agree a new deal with Lampard, to keep him at the Championship side.

However, the Rams look set to need a new manager of their own, as Roman Abramovich seems to have convinced Lampard to return to Stamford Bridge.

So how has Abramovich twisted Lampard’s arm? Readers are told:

Frank Lampard has agreed to begin his Premier League management career at Chelsea after receiving assurances from Roman Abramovich that he will be allowed at least two seasons to prove his worth at Stamford Bridge.

Abramovich is understood to have promised the 40-year-old at least two transfer windows in which to demonstrate his worth. With the club currently serving a two-window transfer ban, that would guarantee Lampard the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

If Lampard does become the new Chelsea manager, he’ll be the first Englishman to fill that post in the 16 years that Abramovich has been with the Blues.

Derby’s compensation

How much will Chelsea have to pay Derby to sign Lampard?

The Sunday Times note that Chelsea and Derby have yet to agree terms over that compensation package, while adding:

Chelsea will use money paid to them by Juventus for Sarri to recompense the financially troubled Midlands club for the two remaining years on Lampard’s contract.
