Chelsea’s Reece James withdraws from England U21 squad after reportedly suffering injury in training

Chelsea have reportedly been dealt an injury blow, less than two weeks from the new Premier League campaign getting underway.

Brighton vs Chelsea

The English top-flight, of course, is set to return our screens on September 12th, after a break of less than two months.

Chelsea, though, will be one of the final sides to return to Premier League action.

The Blues will travel to the Amex Stadium to face Brighton on Monday the 14th.

Chelsea boast a superb record against the Seagulls, having not lost to them since 1933.

James out of England under-21 squad

With just under two weeks until Chelsea return to action, though, the Londoners are sweating over the fitness of a number of players.

Frank Lampard’s squad returned to training recently, but, as we covered last week, eight first-team players – believed to be Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham, Christian Pulisic, Jorginho, Ross Barkley, Emerson and Michy Batshuayi – missed out after being placed in coronavirus quarantine.

New signing Hakim Ziyech then picked up an issue during Chelsea’s first pre-season game over the weekend, with Lampard having since confirmed that the attack-minded midfielder suffered a knock on his knee, a problem which needed to be assessed.

Now, as mentioned above, Chelsea appear to have been dealt yet another blow on the personnel front on Wednesday.

This comes with England having confirmed that Blues right-back Reece James has pulled out of their latest under-21 squad.

The Young Lions did not specify whether James is injured or not, but football.london have since reported that the 20-year-old picked up a problem in training.
