Chelsea’s friendly meeting with the New England Revolution in the early hours of this morning saw the Blues dealt an absolutely devastating blow on the injury-front.
Chelsea comfortable victors
Maurizio Sarri’s men travelled to the United States for a charity-based meeting with MLS outfit New England Revolution.
The clash was set up in a bid to raise funds for Anti-Semitic Foundations around the world.
As per ESPN:
‘The match raised more than $4 million, with Roman Abramovich and Revolution owner Robert Kraft each personally donating $1 million to the cause.’
The matchup itself saw a strong Chelsea side, including the likes of David Luiz and Eden Hazard, eventually brush the hosts aside to emerge with a 3-0 victory.
Ross Barkley bagged a brace for the Blues, with Olivier Giroud having also been on target.
An otherwise comfortable day’s work for Chelsea, however, was soured in a major way by a serious injury picked up by Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
After being introduced as a half-time substitute, the English midfielder lasted just over 20 minutes before an awkward turn of his left foot saw Loftus-Cheek left grounded in clear agony on the Gillette Stadium turf.
Chelsea’s physio team subsequently helped the 23-year-old off the pitch, before he was immediately ushered down the tunnel for further treatment.
And, in a nightmare update for the Premier League giants, the severity of Loftus-Cheek’s injury has since been confirmed.
As per the reliable Nizaar Kinsella, the Blues’ star has ruptured his achilles tendon:
Ruben Loftus-Cheek has ruptured his Achilles tendon. Absolutely devastating. No one deserves that injury but particularly not him and not now. #CFC

Chelsea vs Arsenal
While an exact time-frame has yet to be revealed for Loftus-Cheek’s recovery, he is obviously set to miss Chelsea’s Europa League meeting with Arsenal at the end of the month, as well as a significant chunk of next season.
