Chelsea boss Tuchel provides Tammy Abraham update & explains why Edouard Mendy isn’t going on international duty
Chelsea vs Sheffield United
The first of two FA Cup quarter-final ties on Sunday took place a short time ago.
Chelsea played host to Sheffield United, aiming to join Southampton and Manchester City in this season’s semi-finals.
To make it to the last-eight, Chelsea saw off Morecambe, Luton and Barnsley.
And they were handed a fairly favourable tie this time around, too. Sheffield United sit dead bottom of the Premier League at present, looking set for a return to the Championship next season.
So, it shouldn’t have come as too much of a surprise to see a Chelsea side who were unbeaten in 13 outings under Thomas Tuchel before Sunday eventually come away with the win.
The first 45 at Stamford Bridge was pretty uneventful. However, the hosts nevertheless took the lead when Ollie Norwood directed Ben Chilwell’s effort into his own net:
Uh oh, Ollie Norwood 😳

Despite being the much better side on paper, Chelsea went on to struggle considerably during the second 45, allowing the Blades to grow into the tie, and pile the pressure on Kepa’s goal late on.
However, Chelsea’s resilient backline was able to hold out, before Hakim Ziyech’s late strike put the result beyond doubt.
Tuchel on Abraham & Mendy
Following his side’s latest win, Thomas Tuchel held his post-match press conference a short time ago.
During the presser, Tuchel provided an update on Tammy Abraham, who was reported to be back in training on Friday.
However, the striker was once again absent this afternoon, with Tuchel having since confirmed that Abraham was forced to put the brakes on his return, after suffering a similar injury to his previous one:
“He stopped training yesterday after the warm-up. So there was no chance he could be in the squad. He had a similar injury to exactly where the first injury was. So he had to quit training after five minutes yesterday.”
Tuchel then confirmed that Edouard Mendy will not be heading on international duty, because he is set to undergo an operation on his teeth:
“Hakim Ziyech will be going away on international duty. Edouard Mendy will be staying because he’s got a tooth operation.”
