Chelsea boss Lampard provides updates on Werner & Pulisic ahead of Liverpool

Chelsea see off Brighton

Chelsea and Brighton rounded out the first weekend of 2020/21 Premier League action on Monday evening.

There was, understandably, much excitement surrounding the Blues prior to kick-off, as the clash represented the first chance many fans had to see some of their marquee summer signings in the club’s colours.

And though injuries prevented the likes of Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell from travelling to the Amex, German duo Timo Werner and Kai Havertz featured from the off.

The former was arguably Chelsea’s best performer on the night, with his blistering pace having played a key role in winning a first-half penalty.

Jorginho would step up to convert the ensuing spot-kick in his typically calm fashion.

The Londoners went in with a comfortable 1-0 lead at the break, but Brighton started the second-half well on top.

This eventually resulted in the Seagulls levelling things up nine minutes after the interval, via a long-range effort from Leandro Trossard.

Chelsea hit back almost instantaneously, though, with a thunderbolt of their own – this one coming from Reece James.

A Kurt Zouma strike 10 minutes later, which took a big deflection to wrong-foot Matt Ryan, then killed the game off, ensuring that Chelsea headed back to southwest London with all three points.

Lampard on Pulisic & Werner

Lampard and co. must now turn their attentions to what will likely prove a much tougher test vs Liverpool this coming Sunday.

And, ahead of the clash, the Chelsea boss has moved to provide fitness updates on a few of his stars.

First up, Lampard confirmed that Werner took a knock in winning the aforementioned penalty on Monday, which the club hope is just a dead leg.

Should this prove the case, the English tactician seems confident that the attacker will be fit to face Liverpool:

“He took a knock when he won the penalty which we hope is a dead leg. I would like to think if it is that we have a bit of time to get him back [for the Liverpool game].”

Lampard sounded less optimistic when speaking about Christian Pulisic, however, with the American having taken ‘a few steps back’ in his recovery of late:

“Christian was training with us last week but he had a bit of discomfort a couple of days ago when he was trying to be in contention for today. It would have been a big ask for today and he has had to take a few steps back and we will have to see.”

The Blues boss also confirmed that Jorginho, who was withdrawn after 85 minutes vs Brighton, was simply suffering from fatigue:

“Jorginho is just tiredness. A lot of players are not fully fit at the moment and that is just the way it is. I thought they dealt with the rigors of the game very well in terms of how tough it is to come to Brighton when you are not quite there.”
