Chelsea boost: Jose Mourinho confirms Spurs are prioritising Europa League over League Cup

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that he will be prioritising a result in his side’s Europa League meeting with Maccabi Haifa over their League Cup showdown with Chelsea tomorrow night.

Tottenham’s testing schedule

The Lilywhites are set to return to action in 24 hours’ time.

Despite having only taken to the pitch in a Premier League meeting with Newcastle on Sunday, the hectic early-season schedule facing Spurs means that they have been afforded just 2 days to prepare for a League Cup 4th-round clash with London rivals Chelsea.

And, incredibly, this will be followed by yet another fixture on Thursday.

After navigating their route through the first two rounds of Europa League qualifiers, Mourinho’s men will be forced to see out one final matchup to book their spot in the competition’s group stage.

This comes in the form of a one-off meeting with Israeli giants Maccabi Haifa.

‘Don’t think I can…’

As such, for Mourinho and Spurs, something simply has to give.

The first signs of early-season wear and tear took their toll on Sunday afternoon, when Heung-min Son was hauled off at half-time of the north Londoners’ stalemate with Newcastle after picking up a hamstring problem.

It therefore seems inevitable that heavy rotation will be forthcoming amongst Tottenham’s ranks over the coming week.

What had not appeared clear before today, though, was exactly where Mourinho’s priorities lay – the League Cup? Or the Europa League?

But, as outlined above, the Portuguese tactician has, on Monday, gone on to confirm exactly where he will be focusing his efforts.

Speaking in a press conference, Mourinho was drawn on his side’s fast-approaching meeting with Chelsea, with a specific emphasis on whether star man Harry Kane will be utilised from the off.

The Spurs boss, though, all-but confirmed that he has opted against fielding a first-choice XI on Tuesday, with the financial reward of reaching the Europa League’s group stages simply too much to ignore:

‘What would you do in my position? I would like to fight for the Carabao but I don’t think I can. We have a game on Thursday that gives us not as much money as the Champions League, but the group phase of the Europa League gives us a certain amount that for a club like us is very important.’

‘It’s a competition with a possible group phase that gives us a good chance to go through to the next knockout stage, so this game on Thursday is very important for us.’
