Chelsea vs Newcastle
Rafa Benitez returned to Stamford Bridge on Sunday with Newcastle in the FA Cup.
Chelsea were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage on Wednesday, losing their second-leg match 2-1 at Arsenal. Eden Hazard opened the scoring before the Gunners turned things around.
Wednesday’s defeat ended the Blues’ 12-match unbeaten run.
Chelsea have already beaten Newcastle once this season when the two sides met in the Premier League in December. Dwight Gayle opened the scoring before goals from Hazard (2) and Alvaro Morata handed Chelsea a 3-1 win.
Why do Chelsea fans boo Newcastle’s Rafa Benitez?
In the warm up on Sunday at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea fans reacted badly to hearing ‘Rafa Benitez’ called out the loudspeaker.
When the Newcastle boss was mentioned, Chelsea fans booed the Spaniard.
During his time in charge of the Pensioners, Benitez finished the season in third place with Chelsea. He also won the Europa League and got to semi-finals in both domestic cups.
Yet Chelsea fans never accepted Benitez as ‘one of their own’.
Much of that had to do with Benitez’s past at Liverpool. During his days at Anfield, the Spanish boss often fell out with then Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.
Benitez also once called Chelsea striker Didier Drogba a diver before he took over at the Blues.
Whether Chelsea fans are still really upset over these events is questionable. Nevertheless the boos are clearly not stopping anytime soon.

"We welcome back our former manager Rafa Benitez…" Boo! Half the ground is still in the pub, and they're probably booing in there too.
