Alaba keeping top clubs on alert
A number of top European sides are understood to be keeping a close eye on David Alaba’s situation at Bayern Munich.
The Austrian has spent the majority of his career on Bayern’s books, and has, for many years, been a key figure in their backline.
However, Alaba currently has less than a year left on his contract with Bayern.
And despite the defender’s importance to the Bundesliga champions, negotiations over a new deal are understood to have stalled last month, with Alaba’s agent having reportedly asked Bayern to pay the 28-year-old €20m-per-year.
Around a month later, meanwhile, not a lot appears to have changed.
According to the Telegraph, Alaba is holding out for a contract that would reflect his status as one of the world’s best footballers.
Such issues in negotiations have also seemingly put a number of Europe’s heavyweights on alert, with the Telegraph adding:
Chelsea and Manchester City are among a number of leading clubs who are monitoring whether David Alaba signs a new contract at Bayern Munich.
Landing Alaba (presumably for something of a cut-price fee based on his contract situation) would no doubt prove a huge coup for either Man City or Chelsea, both of whom are in clear need of defensive reinforcements.
However, it’s worth noting that the Telegraph also assert that Bayern are ‘desperate’ to maintain Alaba’s services, with the possibility of the Munich-based outfit allowing the defender to run down his deal and leave for free next year also touted.
Lampard wasn’t keen on Ake
One player whom Chelsea are seemingly not too keen to sign, though, is Nathan Ake.
The Dutchman spent six years on Chelsea’s books, before being sold to Bournemouth on a permanent basis in 2017.
Ake went on to establish himself as a standout performer for the Cherries, but now looks set to join Manchester City for around £41m.
And according to David Ornstein, whilst Chelsea’s buy-back clause gave them first refusal on Ake, Frank Lampard wasn’t keen on the defender:
Chelsea never likely to re-sign Ake. Buyback clause gave #CFC 1st refusal but Lampard wasn’t keen. Some interest from Man Utd and OGS did say something to Ake on pitch about #MUFC wanting a centre-back. But it was always Man City @TheAthleticUK #MCFC #AFCB https://t.co/6bbaR6ZuXr
