Chelsea absence incoming? Tottenham dealt yet another damaging injury blow vs Rennes

The first-half of Tottenham Hotspur’s meeting with Stade Rennais this evening has seen the Lilywhites dealt their latest blow on the personnel front.

All square

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are of course currently locked in action in France.

In the club’s maiden Europa Conference League outing, Spurs made the trip to Roazhon Park, for a group stage meeting with Rennes.

And the opening 45 minutes have since proven of a hugely entertaining nature.

The game’s scoring was opened with just ten minutes on the clock, when a fine breakaway on the part of the visitors ultimately culminated in Lucas Moura’s delivery across the face of goal being diverted home by the unfortunate Loic Bade.

It didn’t take long, however, for Rennes to bag a deserved equaliser.

On the back of a sustained spell of pressure midway through the half, Flavien Tait directed a superb right-footed finish into the far bottom corner of Pierluigi Gollini’s net:

Bergwijn hobbled

As outlined above, though, an otherwise thoroughly enjoyable evening of football in the northwest of France thus far was soured by an injury blow on the half-hour mark.

Tottenham proved the side left concerned, after a heavy challenge on Steven Bergwijn left the Dutchman grounded, and requiring treatment.

In turn, after being seen to by the visitors’ medical team, it was ultimately decided that Bergwijn was in no condition to continue, with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg having been introduced in his place.

The 23-year-old, for obvious reasons, now looks a doubt to feature in Tottenham’s next outing, a Premier League showdown with capital rivals Chelsea on Sunday evening.

Bergwijn, just back from a spell on the sidelines, joins the likes of Heung-min Son and Ryan Sessegnon on the treatment table in North London.
