Andre Gomes set to return this weekend
Carlo Ancelotti has given an update on the availability of midfielder Andre Gomes, after he recovered from an ankle fracture-dislocation.
Gomes signed for Everton, initially on loan, back in 2018.
He played 27 times in the Premier League during his first season, and his performances earned him a permanent move to Goodison Park.
He also started the current season well, but Gomes suffered an ankle fracture-dislocation back in November, following a challenge from Tottenham’s Son Heung-min.
Despite fears from fans that Gomes could miss the remainder of the season, the midfielder is back in training.
Now, Carlo Ancelotti has even suggested that Gomes could start against Arsenal this weekend.
“My personal opinion is he is ready to play”
Speaking ahead of the clash with Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal this weekend, Ancelotti confirmed that Gomes came through a practice match unscathed over the weekend.
He then revealed that Gomes is available for selection this weekend, and that he would prefer to start the player, rather than bringing him off the bench.
“He did well [in the weekend practice match], he played comfortably and without any problems and he is available, in my opinion, to play,” Ancelotti explained, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
“Of course, I have to speak to him about how he feels after playing his first game following a long time out.
“My personal opinion is he is ready to play.
“When a player has been out for a long period, I think it is better to start the game.
“He can prepare properly, [rather] than to put him on from the bench.
“But I have to speak to him and together we can find a solution.”
Considering his injury, that is a stunning recovery from Gomes, and Everton fans will be delighted to have him back.
