Carlo Ancelotti backtracks on James Rodriguez claims as Everton star could yet face Southampton

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that James Rodriguez has not yet been ruled out of the club’s upcoming meeting with Southampton.

Everton flying high

The Toffees are set to return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon.

Ancelotti’s men will of course head into proceedings brimming with confidence, on the back of a stellar start to the campaign.

Amid a run of 8 games unbeaten across all competitions, Everton sit pretty atop the English top-flight, with 13 points.

The Merseysiders’ last outing, meanwhile, a drama-filled 2-2 derby draw with champions Liverpool, saw them prove that they are ready to mix it with the Premier League’s elite over the course of the gruelling campaign ahead.

Central to the Blues’ upturn have of course been the club’s summer additions.

An impressive window on Everton’s part saw a number of high-profile names, including Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez, make the move to Goodison Park.

All 3, meanwhile, have since looked superb.

‘Not definitely out’

As such, it no doubt came as a major source of concern for fans of the Toffees when, during a pre-Southampton press conference on Thursday, Carlo Ancelotti revealed that Rodriguez had been all but ruled out of the club’s next outing:

‘Unfortunately, James had a problem during the game.’

‘He had a mistimed tackle with Virgil van Dijk at the beginning of the game and I think he will not be available for the game against Southampton.’

If the latest comments on the part of the Everton boss, just 24 hours later, are anything to go by, though, then the Colombian’s involvement versus Southampton in fact remains up in the air.

Speaking to the media on Friday afternoon, Ancelotti explained:

‘No, he’s not definitely out.’

‘Fortunately his recovery was really good and he trained today, just a partial training session.’

‘I hope he’ll train tomorrow and we’ll see if he’s ready for Sunday.’
