Carlisle United vs Cardiff City: Match preview

Carlisle and Cardiff are set to go head-to-head in an FA Cup 3rd round replay on Wednesday evening.

The two sides would face off earlier this month at the Cardiff City stadium.

The Championship outfit looked set for a rather embarrassing 3rd round exit when League Two side Carlisle found themselves two goals to the good at half-time.

However, Cardiff would muster up a much better second 45 display with goals from Callum Paterson and Gavin Whyte ensuring the Welsh side’s blushes were spared for at least one more game.

The winner of Wednesday’s tie has been drawn away to either Reading or Blackpool in the 4th round of the competition.

Given the two team’s contrasting form of late and their league positions, Carlisle getting anything out of that last tie was somewhat of a surprise.

Carlisle are currently languishing at the wrong end of League Two and are in serious danger of slipping into the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Cardiff are proving a tough nut to crack in the Championship of late. Neil Harris’ side have lost just one of their last five league clashes.

But should Carlisle indeed cause an upset and reach the 4th round, it will be only the second time they have progressed past the 3rd round in over 20 years.

Carlisle United & Cardiff City: FA Cup records

The League Two outfit have never made it past the quarter-final of the competition and they have not reached that stage since the 1974/75 campaign.

As for Cardiff, they have not won the FA Cup since the 1926/27 season. But they were runners-up in 2008 when they lost out to Portsmouth in the final.

The Bluebirds will also be looking to avoid a repeat of last season’s FA Cup disaster when they were knocked out in the 3rd round by League One side Gillingham.
