Bukayo Saka speaks out after Euro 2020 heartbreak

Bukayo Saka speaks out after Euro 2020 heartbreak

Bukayo Saka has taken to social media several days after his penalty shoot-out miss saw Italy emerge victorious from the Euro 2020 final.

Saka, a second-half substitute, was tasked with taking the fifth penalty in the shoot-out, his first ever at competitive level. After misses from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, Saka needed to score to keep England in the shoot out.

However, the teenager saw his spot-kick saved by Italian hero Gianluigi Donnarumma, sending Italians across the world into euphoria.

Although much was made of Gareth Southgate’s decision to allow Saka to take such an important penalty, it speaks volumes to the maturity of the Arsenal man, who had to that point overcome every career challenge that faced him with flying colours.

Although the penalty miss is what the nineteen-year-old will undoubtedly remember Euro 2020 for, his progress to that point had been nothing short of meteoric. After forcing his way into the England squad only last summer, Saka was thought to be in danger of missing out on Southgate’s 26-man squad for the tournament.

Instead, though, he was thrust into the starting eleven for a decisive group game against the Czech Republic, and subsequently excelled in both the round of 16 and semi-final stages. That it was a surprise to see him omitted from the England side on Sunday speaks volumes to the impact that the youngster had both on the nation’s manager and the wider public, with his persona having secured Saka fans from across club lines.

Saka speaks out

Saka, Rashford and Sancho were all subject to sickening racist abuse after the game on Sunday, but all have since spoken out. On the topic, Saka wrote:

“I will not let that moment or the negativity I’ve received this week break me”

He continued:

“To the social media platforms Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, I don’t want any child or adult to receive the hateful and hurtful messages that me, Marcus and Jadon, have received this week. I knew instantly the kind of hate that I was about to receive and that is a sad reality that your powerful platforms are not doing enough to stop these messages”

“There is no place for racism or hate of any kind in football or in area of society”

Saka will join up with Arsenal for the new season when he returns from holiday, and the club’s fans will be glad to have him back home.
