Bruno Fernandes equals Frank Lampard benchmark, but Harry Maguire injury casts cloud over Man United’s Villa Park win

Bruno Fernandes equals Frank Lampard benchmark, but Harry Maguire injury casts cloud over Man United’s Villa Park win

Manchester United recovered from a goal down to eventually get the better of Aston Villa this evening, with star midfielder Bruno Fernandes having reached a hugely impressive goalscoring benchmark in the process.

Greenwood & Cavani on target

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were back in action a short time ago.

The Red Devils made the trip to Villa Park, for a Premier League meeting with the Claret and Blue.

United headed into proceedings with spirits high in the club’s camp, after of course booking their spot in the final of the Europa League at the expense of AS Roma during the week.

And, when all was said and done in Birmingham on Sunday, the Manchester giants kept the club’s positive recent spell of form firmly alive.

It was actually Aston Villa who opened the game’s scoring, when Bertrand Traore took advantage of some less than stellar defending on the part of Victor Lindelof, to fire a wonderful effort into the top corner of Dean Henderson’s net:

As has proven the case so often this season, though, United soon fought back.

First, Bruno Fernandes pulled the Reds level from the penalty spot, after Douglas Luiz had needlessly felled Paul Pogba in the hosts’ area.

Then, less than five minutes later, Mason Greenwood turned the clash on its head, cutting inside onto his favoured left foot, before picking out the near corner of Emi Martinez’s goal:

And there was even time for the in-form Edinson Cavani to get in on the act, glancing a trademark header home five minutes from time, as Manchester United got a hectic run of upcoming fixtures off to the perfect start.

Fernandes shining/Maguire concern

As outlined above, whilst Cavani went on to add some gloss to the scoreline, it was that man Bruno Fernandes who pulled the visitors on terms this afternoon, with a typically cool strike from 12 yards.

The spot-kick marked the 113th netted in the Premier League to this point in the campaign, a new single-season record for the division.

Not only that, but Fernandes’ latest finish also proved a significant one from an individual standpoint, with the former Sporting man having now notched 27 goals across all competitions this season, the most by a Premier League midfielder since Chelsea legend Frank Lampard back in 2010:

On an otherwise positive afternoon for Manchester United on Sunday, however, the Red Devils were also dealt a blow.

This came a little over ten minutes from time, when Edinson Cavani’s challenge resulted in Anwar El Ghazi falling awkwardly into the planted leg of Harry Maguire.

The visitors’ captain immediately went to ground wincing in pain, and, despite repeated efforts to continue, was eventually forced to limp off:

An update on Maguire’s wellbeing is likely to be forthcoming over the days ahead.
