Brighton’s Gaëtan Bong abused at West Brom

Brighton defender Gaëtan Bong was subjected to nasty abuse at West Brom on Wednesday night in a fourth round FA Cup replay.

A section of West Brom supporters targeted Bong as they chanted “one smelly bastard”.

Those chants surfaced in the 106th minute of the match when Bong replaced Bruno Saltor.

Gaëtan Bong & West Brom

Why did the West Brom fans sing such a deplorable chant at Bong?

It stems back to the defender’s clash with WBA striker Jay Rodriguez.

In January 2018, Bong claimed that Rodriguez told him: ‘You’re black and you stink’.

That lead to a private hearing, while Rodriguez was eventually cleared of those claims.

Chris Hughton on the Gaëtan Bong chant

After Wednesday’s FA Cup match, Brighton manager Chris Hughton reacted to the Gaëtan Bong chant:

What we heard tonight is not nice. One thing that the game has done very well in recent years is pick up on anything we need to.

The original case was dealt with very well by the FA and it’s something that everybody has put behind them.

I heard the chant but I couldn’t hear the wording.

What we have in Gaëtan is a very upright, respectable individual.

For those who make those chants that’s there individual choice and it’s down to the authorities and governance of the game to deal with.

For the record, West Brom manager Darren Moore said he didn’t hear the chant.
