Brighton vs Southampton betting tips: Premier League match preview & predictions

Brighton vs Southampton prediction: Brighton 2-0 Southampton

An all South Coast affair from the AMEX.

These two might share geographical proximity but they have had massively contrasting starts.

Brighton are unbeaten under Graham Potter and would love to keep that going for as long as possible.

As for Southampton, there was a lot of optimism coming into this campaign after the form they showed under Ralph Hasenhüttl in the second half of the last campaign.

However, based on what they have shown so far, that optimism may have been misguided.

Brighton could hardly have wished for a better start to life under Graham Potter.

His first game at the helm was a trip to Watford a fortnight ago and the Seagulls went in front around the half hour mark through an own goal.

Mid-way through the second half, Potter changed both his strikers bringing on Florin Andone and Neal Maupay.

It turned out to be a stroke of genius as both scored to seal a 3-0 victory.

Last weekend was their first home match of the new era.

Despite falling behind in the second half, Leandro Trossard’s first goal for the club helped them earn a 1-1 draw with West Ham United.

Four points from two games represents an excellent start.

Next week they travel to the Etihad Stadium so they’ll be desperate to add to their tally ahead of that daunting task.

Will Potter’s unbeaten run remain in tact?

Can Southampton get off the mark?

As for Southampton, they are one of just four teams to have zero points after two matches.

On the opening day, the Saints conceded three goals in 12 minutes as they were beaten 3-0 at Turf Moor by Burnley.

Then, last weekend, the European Champions were the first visitors to St Mary’s of the season.

Liverpool were 2-0 ahead with ten minutes to go before a howler from the goalkeeper, kicking the ball at Danny Ings, gave Southampton a way back into the game.

Ings then had a great chance to snatch a draw but it was an opportunity that he squandered.

1-2 it finished.

Last season under Ralph Hasenhüttl, Southampton amassed 30 points in 22 matches.

However, it’s zero from two so far this year and, next weekend, they host Manchester United.

Southampton are unbeaten in their last five matches played south of Southampton so will be hoping to keep that run going.

The Saints need points and they need them fast so will they get off the mark down the coast?

Glenn Murray Brighton

The first change Graham Potter made as Brighton manager was switching the formation to 3-4-2-1.

So far, it is working brilliantly.

Goalkeeper Mat Ryan has kept just 17 clean sheets in 76 appearances for the club but will be looking to improve that ratio this year.

In front of him, a back three of Lewis Dunk, Shane Duffy and Dan Burn appears to be very solid.

In midfield, Dale Stephens and Davy Pröpper look to be the first choice duo.

Yves Bissouma and summer signing Aaron Mooy will have to wait for their opportunities.

Solly March did not seem t0 be the natural choice for left wing-back but that is where he is being deployed at the moment.

Further forward, Leandro Trossard scored 22 goals and registered 11 assists last season as he helped Genk to the Jupiler League title.

He got his first Premier League goal last weekend.

Pascal Groß will be the other player behind the loan front man who is expected to be Glenn Murray.

Despite the fact Neal Maupay and Florin Andone both scored at Watford, the man who turns 36 next month is still Brighton’s main man for goals.

Will this side maintain their unbeaten start to the season?

Southampton team news vs Brighton & Hove Albion

As for Southampton, Ralph Hasenhüttl also favours a back three system so they’re also expected to deploy a 3-4-2-1 formation.

Angus Gunn appears to be the number one at St Mary’s these days.

Although, only one Premier League goalkeeper has conceded more goals than him so far this season.

That could be due to the fact they didn’t massively strengthen at the back so their defence will consist of players who were there last year.

Maya Yoshida, Jannik Vestergaard and Jan Bednarek will once again get the nod over Jack Stephens or Wesley Hoedt.

Kevin Danso, who joined the club from FC Augsburg on deadline day, is still awaiting his debut.

In midfield, they changed to a 3-5-2 for the visit of Liverpool but Oriol Romeu could well drop out for a more attack minded player.

Captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and vice-captain James Ward-Prowse will make up the midfield duo.

Further forward Che Adams and Nathan Redmond will now have a central striker to fead off in Danny Ings.

Since the start of last season, Ings has scored eight Premier League goals for Southampton, more than any other player.

Will this XI get Saints’ first points on the board of the campaign?
