Brian Kerr reveals what Mike Phelan has told him about his future Man United role

Phelan’s role unclear

When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer returned to Manchester United as interim boss, Mike Phelan was also appointed as a part of his coaching staff.

Now, with OGS the permanent United manager, Phelan’s role is still very much up in the air.

It was recently rumoured that he could be appointed as the club’s Technical Director.

But according to Brian Kerr, Phelan is still reportedly unclear on his future role at Old Trafford:

“From week to week even Mike Phelan said to me there the picture changes from week to week.

“I was chatting to Mike Phelan asking was he going to be in the coaching role next year or is he going to take the role of the Technical Director and he said ‘I don’t know they haven’t spoken to me’.”

Rio Ferdinand has also been linked with the United Technical Director job.

Man United fail to qualify for Champions League

No matter who is in what role next season, one thing that is for certain is that Manchester United will not be playing Champions League football next campaign.

United played Huddersfield on Sunday and needed to win to stand any chance of finishing in the top four.

However, they went on to draw 1-1 in another poor display.

4th-placed Chelsea (now 3rd), however, won 3-0 vs Watford, meaning the top four, barring an Arsenal miracle, will be Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea.

As such, Man United and Arsenal will be plying their trade in the Europa League next year, unless of course the Gunners can secure Europa League glory at the end of the month.
