Brazilian icon Taffarel has this afternoon opened up on the talents of AS Roma shot-stopper extraordinaire Alisson.
Alisson, full name Alisson Becker, is a 25-year-old Brazilian international, and emerged as one of the most impressive goalkeepers in world football after taking over as Roma’s no.1 this past season, following the end of Wojciech Szczęsny’s loan with the club.
The former Internacional star has already earned 25 international caps, and is currently viewed as the Selecao’s first-choice between the posts, ahead of Manchester City’s Ederson.
Alisson’s stellar form over the last 9 months has seen the South American linked with a whole host of top European clubs, with English giants Liverpool long named as the side expressing the most genuine interest in his services.
The Reds are known to have been keeping an eye out for reinforcements in the goalkeeping department for some time now, with the costly performance of Loris Karius in the Champions League final having since seen links between Liverpool and Alisson intensify (though an explanation has since emerged for Karius’ nightmare in Kiev).
‘He is very happy’
Speaking in an interview with Italian radio station Tele Radio Stereo earlier today, former Brazilian international goalkeeper Taffarel, who racked up 101 caps for the Selecao between 1988 and 1998, was questioned on the future of his fellow countryman, with the 52-year-old having revealed his opinion that Alisson is very much content with his surroundings in Rome:
‘He is very happy at Roma and the rumours of a transfer are just rumours. I don’t know what will happen, but he said he’d be content to remain at Roma.’
‘A step above’
Taffarel was also drawn on the battle for no.1 duties between the posts for Brazil at this moment in time, with the South Americans possessing a pair of top goalkeepers in Alisson and Ederson.
As previously mentioned, Alisson is considered as first-choice by Selecao boss Tite, a choice which Taffarel fully agrees with:
‘Alisson is only a year older than Ederson, but has grown so much, ever since he was given the starting role against Venezuela. He is a step above Ederson right now, as the Manchester City man can improve with his feet and in terms of experience.’
‘Alisson could be named among the best goalkeepers in the world, along with Thibaut Courtois, David De Gea and Manuel Neuer.’
