Brazil vs Paraguay Copa América match preview

The hosts have safely made it through to the knockout stages and are now targeting their ninth Copa América title.

They’ve won all four tournament played in Brazil and will be confident of going all the way once again.

Tite’s side did start slowly though.

It took them nearly an hour to break down Bolivia before a brace from Philippe Coutinho and a wonder strike from Everton saw them to a 3-0 win.

In their second match, they had three goals disallowed and were frustratingly held to a 0-0 draw by Venezuela.

However, they were able to turn on the style against Peru on Saturday.

Casemiro broke the deadlock early before Roberto Firmino made it 2-0 with a no-look finish.

Everton’s second strike from outside the box of the tournament made it 3-0 before Dani Alves finished off an excellent move just after half time.

At the age of 36 years and 47 days, Alves is the oldest player to score at a Copa for Brazil for 97 years.

Willian made it 5-0 late on to cap off five star performance for the 5-time World Champions.

As well as all their amazing attacking play, Brazil have now not conceded a goal in their last nine Copa América match played on home soil.

Seleção looked back to their best and they should be confident of getting through this quarter-final.

As for Paraguay, it would be an understatement to say they snuck into the knockout stages.

On matchday one, they found themselves 2-0 ahead against Qatar thanks to a penalty from Óscar Cardozo and a wonder strike by Derlis González.

However, two very soft late goals saw Qatar come back and earn a 2-2 draw.

Los Guaraníes were then left ruing their luck again in their second game.

Richard Sánchez put them ahead but then missed a penalty as they drew 1-1 with Argentina.

On Sunday, they were beaten by Colombia and, despite only have two points, they finished as the second best third-placed team.

Two points only got a side through in one of the previous nine tournament with this format and that was in 1993.

It doesn’t bode well for them.

Paraguay are winless in their last ten Copa América games (five draws and five defeats), a new unwanted national record.

That run is likely to be extended here.

It would be one of the biggest shocks in Copa América history if Brazil did not progress in this one.
