Settle for third
Paris Saint-Germain Neymar is no doubt looking to overthrow Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the Ballon d’Or but he needs to forget about it.
That is what Brazil legend Roberto Carlos has suggested as the Brazilian is still some way from achieving his first award.
The PSG has impressed since joining the French giants but his recent form has been blighted because of injury.
A metatarsal injury has ended his Ligue 1 season but he looks likely to be back in time for the World Cup.
Though, even a good World Cup showing is unlikely to get him the 2018 Ballon d’Or according to Roberto Carlos.
That is because the Brazilian has claimed that while Messi and Ronaldo remain at the top of their game, he’s going to have to settle for third
“I think he did well to sign at PSG,” Carlos told France Football, as cited by Eurosport
“To be the best in the world he had to leave Barca because there is Messi. Even if he must be aware that, as long as Messi and Ronaldo are in form, he will have to settle for third place.”
You certainly cannot disagree with him right now.
Cristiano Ronaldo started the season poorly but has now found his feet again.
The Portuguese star now has 43 goals for club and country this season, more than any other player.
Messi sits in 5th with 38 goals but the race for the Ballon d’Or is certainly not over yet.
Top Scorers in 2017/18 for club and country:
1. Cristiano Ronaldo (43 Goals)
2. Mohamed Salah (40 Goals)
3. Harry Kane (39 Goals)
4. Robert Lewandowski (38 Goals)
5. Lionel Messi (38 Goals)
