Neymar Brazil World Cup

Brazil legend Cafu defends Neymar after early World Cup exit

In his defence

Brazil legend Cafu has defended Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar after he and the national side exited the World Cup much earlier than expected.

The Brazil national team were tipped as one of the favourites going into the tournaments but you wouldn’t have been able to tell at many times this summer.

That is because, following a lacklustre group stage, they started to show what they could do in the knockout stages but only got past Mexico before being stopped in their tracks by Belgium.

That lead to criticism of the team as a whole but also Neymar who was tipped to be one of the best players in Russia.

‘Our greatest revelation in the last 10 years’

Now, Brazil legend Cafu has defended his compatriot by explaining that Neymar is Brazil’s ‘greatest revelation in the last 10 years’.

‘Neymar is an ace and we expect him to do different things on the pitch,’ Cafu told Globo Esporte.

‘This is normal. It’s obvious that criticism is going to fall on Neymar because of what happened. Was Neymar’s performance what we expected? No. They were a little below, because from an ace people always expect something different.

‘We have a great player. He is our greatest revelation in the last 10 years, one of the greatest Brazilian players of recent times. The World Cup is unforgiving.

‘We want to see Neymar happy, happy, happy because it is good for him and for Brazilian football. He’s a smart boy.

‘He knows what he did at the World Cup, what he can do better and how to move forward.’
