Brazil icon gets statue
With all this talk of statues being built in Claudio Ranieri’s honour, we thought we’d bring you the latest statue news from the world of football. Brazil icon Ronaldo has been immortalised with his own larger-than-life-size image (that’s not an intentional dig). The strangest thing about the statue? It’s location – Portland, Oregon, USA.
Ronaldo posted a picture of the statue on Instagram with the caption: “Good to see you! Visit Nike in Beaverton, USA, where I had the privilege of giving my name to the official @nikefootball field. Another great meeting with this team of professionals that revolutionises the sport, and was fundamental in my career. It is an honour to continue participating in the development process of the always innovative, state-of-the-art football boots.”
Ronaldo and Nike go way back
Back in the day, Ronaldo was the poster boy for Nike. He starred in some of the sports giant’s most famous commercials in the 90’s. He’s been sponsored by them for more than 20 years. The statue, sculpted by Nano Lopez, isn’t the most flattering image of the former Barcelona and Real Madrid forward. It certainly doesn’t look like it was based on an image of the striker at the peak of his powers. In his prime, he was a beast of an athlete, a force of nature.
