Botafogo in talks with Arjen Robben & former Man United defenders Rafael and Fabio da Silva

Botafogo attempt to sign Arjen Robben

Now 36, Arjen Robben retired from football last summer when his contract at Bayern Munich expired.

Robben had a glittering career in Holland, England, Spain and Germany.

He won a total of 12 league titles, including 8 with Bayern Munich and 2 with Chelsea.

A few weeks ago, during an appearance on a Bayern Munich podcast, Robben discussed the possibility of returning to action:

In the beginning, I didn’t miss football at all. But then there was a phase when it tickled again and I had thoughts such as: “Hey, maybe I would like to play a little again”

From time to time I still have this feeling.

On the same podcast, Robben also revealed that his wife had contracted Covid-19. She’s since recovered.

On Wednesday in Brazil, GloboEsporte are reporting that Botafogo are interested in bringing Robben out of retirement.

The vice-chairman of Botafogo, Ricardo Rotenberg, confirmed he’s been in contact with the Dutch winger. Rotenberg said:

For me, he was the best player at the 2014 World Cup.

(Leo) Messi was voted best player because he is Messi. But Robben is my idol, a great player.

There is always a risk if you haven’t played football for too long. But I tried and he answered. He’s happy that Botafogo approached him.

I asked Marcos Leite to contact Robben. He did and spoke to Robben’s agent.

It’s very difficult because he hasn’t played for a long time and if you want you can earn four times more elsewhere. But he knows Botafogo.

It’s worth remembering that Botafogo have success in signing aeging Dutchmen.

Back in 2012, Clarence Seedorf joined the Brazilian club, signing a two-year deal.

Botafogo also target former Man United defenders Rafael and Fabio da Silva

Former Manchester United players, twins Fabio and Rafael da Silva, are also on Botafogo’s shopping list.

Both players are currently in France. Rafael da Silva plays for Lyon, while his 29-year-old twin brother Fabio plays for Nantes.

The Da Silva brothers are both poised to become free agents in 2021.

On the possibility of landing the Brazilian defenders, Ricardo Rotenberg said:

I called them and said: “Botafogo wants you”.

We know that their contracts will run until June 2021. Pre-contracts would only be possible from January. So, we can’t do anything until then. But, the doors are open.

They said they would like to play for Botafogo. And I replied back: “Botafogo wants you too”.
