Boost for Chelsea: Barcelona lose star for the Champions League

Chelsea vs Barcelona in the Champions League

On February 20, Chelsea will host Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

The return leg in the Camp Nou is scheduled for March 14.

The Blues have a long history with Barcelona. Chelsea have faced them on several occasions with mixed results.

Gerard Pique is out injured

On Monday, the likes of Spanish paper AS have confirmed that Barcelona will be without Gerard Pique for the first leg against Chelsea.

Pique is now sidelined for up to a month after picking up an injury in the 1-1 draw at Espanyol.

That injury has left Barca with a shortage at the back.

How will the Catalans line up at Stamford Bridge?

Espanyol 1 – Barcelona 1

Barcelona dropped two points in the Spanish top flight on Sunday.

That’s after Ernesto Valverde’s side were held to a 1-1 by rivals Espanyol in the Catalan derby.

Gerard Moreno fired Espanyol ahead with a header in the 66th minute. But Pique, who was booed throughout the contest, equalised for Barcelona with eight minutes to go.

Interestingly, Leo Messi was left on the bench for the Espanyol game at kick-off as the Argentine was given a bit of a breather.
