Blow for Mourinho: Arsenal in U-turn with Granit Xhaka in line for new contract

A major update on the future of Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has been forthcoming on Friday afternoon.

Widespread speculation has of course surrounded the name of Swiss international Xhaka to this point in the summer.

Mikel Arteta is known to be on the lookout for reinforcements to his ranks in the middle of the park ahead of next season, with a dynamic partner being eyed for Thomas Partey.

This, in turn, has seen Xhaka, on the back of another somewhat hit-and-miss campaign in North London, made available for transfer by those in a position of power at the Emirates.

To this point, the outfit most persistently tipped as a potential landing spot for Arsenal’s out-of-favour midfield general have of course been AS Roma.

The Giallorossi are prepping for a new era over the seasons to come, following the high-profile installment of Jose Mourinho on the bench at the Stadio Olimpico.

And, after already luring one Premier League star – in the form of Rui Patricio – to the Italian capital, Xhaka has long been expected to follow suit.

Gunners stay?

As outlined above, though, if the latest word doing the rounds in the media on Friday is anything to go by, then Edu Gaspar and the board in North London look set to spring an imminent surprise when it comes to the future of their divisive midfield star.

As per a report from reliable outlet The Athletic, Xhaka, out of the blue, looks set to be offered a new Arsenal contract.

Amid the assumption that the Roma hierarchy have failed to meet the demands laid out for the 28-year-old, their counterparts at the Emirates are ready to extend Xhaka’s stay at the club into the coming years:

Significantly, separate reports this afternoon have pointed towards the Swiss remaining a ‘key part’ of the plans of Mikel Arteta, who, according, to The Athletic, views Xhaka’s stellar attitude as ‘a big tick in his favour’.
