Aaron Mooy damaged medial knee ligament during Huddersfield Town’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, according to News Corp.
The Australian is now expected to remain sidelined for around a month as he recovers.
This could rule the 28-year-old out of this winter’s Asian Cup which commences on January 6.
Mooy set for expected spell on sidelines
Reports suggest that Mooy will miss the next four to six weeks due to the injury.
This is a huge blow for David Wagner’s side given the player’s integrity to the team and the number of games at this stage of the year.
Mooy looks likely to miss games against the likes of Southampton, Newcastle United, Manchester United, Fulham and Burnley.
Following the visit of Sean Dyche’s side, Mooy was set to travel with the Australian national team to the UAE.
Australia’s Asian Cup defence dealt blow
Australia have been dealt a huge blow with Tom Rogic also set to miss the tournament due to injury.
The Socceroos are the defending champions having won the tournament back in 2015.
However, with both Mooy and Rogic set to miss the Asian Cup their chances of winning again have been significantly reduced.
