Chelsea may be keen on former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique when it comes to replacing Antonio Conte this summer, but it seems the manager himself has other options.
Enrique has made it clear that there are plenty of options on the table for him, and that he thinks that he will only take a job if it really interests him – something that the majority of jobs he’s been linked with do not.
He was speaking with former Spanish cyclist Ibon Zugasti’s YouTube channel, and said: “There has been interest from clubs, but it has to be something that really excites me.
“There’s no other club where I’ll be able to work with better players than at Barca.
“Maybe a lot of people in the profession were surprised.
“It’s difficult to understand someone leaving Barca, with the best players in the world.
“But I was very clear [that it was the right time]. In fact, I don’t regret it all. Coaching Barca involved dedicating all your energy to the team, the club and the players. When you see the end is coming, you have to take it in, accept it and communicate it. There’s nothing else you can do.”
It’s undoubtedly a blow for Chelsea, who look set on replacing Antonio Conte come the summer, and there’s little wonder given how their season has fallen apart, and it seems that the club will be on the look out for a new manager even if Enrique decides to turn them down.
The way Conte has fallen out with the board and players has given him and the owner very little option, and after the Blues lost to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend and essentially ended their hopes of finishing in the top four, it seems a clean slate all round is the best option come the summer.
