Everton have been dealt a severe injury blow with Argentine defender Ramiro Funes Mori having been ruled out for up to nine months through injury.
The central defender could have been crucial for the Toffees during a busy campaign due to Europa League football.
The club revealed on Wednesday that the defender tore his meniscus while on international duty with Argentina in March.
Now, the club will likely have to dip into the transfer market for a central defender with reinforcements in that department lacking.
Everton have already signed Michael Keane from Burnley but only have Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams as otherwise recognised centre halves.
Youngster Mason Holgate could fill in at the back but it seems likely at this point that the club will move for another recognised central defender.

Barkley – Tottenham could be off
A deal to take Ross Barkley to Tottenham could well be off after a recent announcement by Everton.
The club are reluctant to let the player go for less than the £50m valuation.
Now, a deal could well be off but not because of the clubs valuation.
