Bernd Leno signed for Arsenal this summer from German outfit Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of around £22.5 million.
Leno has now been an Arsenal player for around three and a half months and has decided to open up on his decision to join Arsenal and how he has settled in.
‘Things have started well here and everyone’s been very welcoming’
Speaking about his short spell at Arsenal, Leno stated:
“I found out that Arsenal were interested in me. I was very excited and very nervous too because Arsenal is such a big club with a big history and great fans.
“Playing in the Premier League was a very exciting prospect for me too, and fortunately I already knew a few of the players.
“I’ve known Musti for about 10 or 11 years because we grew up together in the youth national teams.
“Before I made my decision I talked to Musti and Mesut about it a lot. They both said that Arsenal is a big club and that I would love it here.
“Things have started well here and everyone’s been very welcoming. I think we had a great pre-season and I’ve really enjoyed working with Petr.
“He’s a big personality with a lot of experience and he’s also a very good guy. I’ve got a lot of experience too, of course, but he has much more so I can learn from him.
“It’s very good here, the way we work. The coaches do a good job and the staff are very nice.
“The team was very welcoming from the beginning, so I like it here. I want to play, I want to be the No 1 for the coach and I just want to improve for myself.
“At the end of the season, we want to get back into the Champions League of course, and then hopefully win a trophy in the process.”
Leno struggles for game time
Given Arsenal spent over £22 million to bring Leno to London, many people expected him to become Arsenal’s new number one.
However, that has not been the case.
Instead, Petr Cech would keep his place as Arsenal’s number one keeper, starting their first six league games of the season.
Leno would make his Arsenal debut in the Europa League vs Vorskla were the Gunners picked up a 4-2 win.
The German would also start vs Brentford in the League Cup and vs Qarabag in the Europa League.
However, Leno has recently been given his chance to prove himself as Arsenal’s number one.
This is because Petr Cech would suffer an injury vs Watford, allowing Leno to replace him for the rest of that game and in the subsequent league game vs Fulham.
Cech also remains a doubt for Arsenal’s next game vs Leicester City.
