Benitez gives Longstaff his debut
Sean Longstaff was promoted to Newcastle’s senior side in January of 2019.
Rafael Benitez would then hand Longstaff his Premier League debut in a 4-0 loss to Liverpool, in which Longstaff featured for 17 minutes.
The 21-year-old then made his full PL debut against Chelsea, as the Magpies lost 2-1.
In total, the midfielder managed nine league appearances this past season, but he had his campaign cut short due to a knee injury.
Longstaff reconsidering future
Despite Longstaff having just nine Premier League appearances under his belt, he has already been linked with a move to Manchester United.
Longstaff has previously spoken out about being linked with big clubs like United. At the time, though, he insisted that he was 100% focused on Newcastle:
“I’m massively flattered to have my name even mentioned in those conversations but like I said, I’m 100% focused on Newcastle and trying to get fit and get back in the team here.
“For me it’s nice to be have said about you and be linked with top clubs but for me, this is what I’ve always wanted to do.
“I’ve always wanted to play for Newcastle and I’ve only had a little taste of that so for me, it’s about getting fit as soon as I can and getting back on the pitch for Newcastle and making more memories of the future.” As quoted by the Evening Standard.
However, Longstaff’s stance with Newcastle has allegedly changed.
According to the Mirror, Rafael Benitez leaving Newcastle has led Longstaff to reconsider his future.
The report from the Mirror claims that Longstaff is bitterly upset about Benitez departing.
When Benitez left Newcastle, Longstaff posted a message to him via Instagram.
