Wilmots: Accidental Genius

Marc Wilmots was bashed about by the media after Belgium lost their opening match at Euro 2016. Italy outsmarted the Red Devils, a feat made easier by a lack of any tactical plan from Wilmots. That’s how it seemed.

Now it appears as though Wilmots did have a tactical plan. He was thinking of the long game. Most managers focus on each game as it comes. You know the cliche. The Belgium boss is different.

It could turn out that losing 2-0 to Italy was one of the best results of his reign. Why, you ask. The way the knock-out system has developed means that the strongest teams are set to face each other. Not including Belgium.

Euro 2016 Permutations

Spain’s defeat to Croatia means that they’ll face Italy in the last 16. England will face the runner-up of Group F, featuring Portugal, Austria, Hungary and Iceland. France and Germany will also be on that side of proceedings and more than likely clash in the quarter-finals. Belgium will avoid all of the aforementioned teams until the final.

Of course Belgium still have to defeat Sweden tomorrow to secure the runner-up spot in their group.
