Bayern Munich CEO confirms Liverpool-linked Thiago wants to leave club

Bayern standout

Thiago made the switch to FC Bayern Munich in the summer of 2013.

The Bundesliga outfit are understood to have paid just over £22.5m for the midfielder’s services.

Since making the move to Bavaria, Thiago has cemented himself as an integral member of Bayern’s squad.

All told, the deep-lying playmaker has notched 230 appearances across all competitions for Bayern, in which he has scored 31 and assisted 37.

The Spaniard did miss the majority of Bayern’s action following the season’s resumption due to a groin issue.

However, before his latest injury, Thiago had continued to act as a key figure for the Munich-based outfit, notching 24 league appearances as Bayern cruised to yet another domestic title.

Thiago to Liverpool?

But if the aforementioned comments from Bayern’s CEO are anything to go by, then the former Barcelona star’s time at the club is all but over.

Speaking in a recent interview with German outlet Bild, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed that Thiago wants to move on:

“He’s a great guy on and off the pitch. We negotiated with him and met all of his wishes.

“But he [Thiago Alcantara] wants to leave. It looks like he may want to do something new at the end of his career.

Bayern’s CEO then all but confirmed that they will look to sell the midfielder this summer, rather than losing him for free when his current deal expires:

“We don’t want to lose a player for free next year. I say that very clearly!”

Rummenigge’s comments come just days after reports in the Spanish press claimed that Thiago is ‘very close to Liverpool’.

However, when asked about interest from the Reds, Rummenigge claimed that there has been no contact:

“We haven’t had any contact with Liverpool.”
